Rick Blanc - Vertigo - by Chuck Dauphin It seems that male Country singers always have to have their hat on in pictures. It’s almost like it’s a prop that certifies him as a singer, whether he has the pipes or not. I first looked at this CD, saw Rick Blanc in a hat, and thought “Oh, no….another one.” Then, I hit play and listened to the music. After all, that’s what matters, right? All joking aside, Blanc has some good stuff here. The disc starts with the in-your-face sound of “Long Way From Lonesome,” and doesn’t slow down any on the second track, “Forget About Me,” a pretty good kiss-off song. The tempo slows on the nostalgic “That’s Us,” about two best friends and their friendship. The title track has a little bit of a Mafia edge to it, and “Denver” is a perfect match for his vocals. Whether it is a ballad, like the weeper “When I Say Grace,” or “Love Me Or Not,” Blanc more than proves that he deserves his shot. The album closes with the rollicking “Turn This Train Around,” but if I were Blanc, I would go full steam ahead…..I know I’m on this bandwagon!
